Reviving the Salt Industry: Pangasinan Leads the Way

Pangasinan, whose very name means “place of salt,” has long been recognized as the salt capital of the Philippines. For generations, its coastal towns produced tons of high-quality salt, supplying markets across the country. But in recent years, the industry suffered setbacks—declining production, cheaper imports, and lack of modern facilities weakened what was once a thriving livelihood for many families.

Today, the Provincial Government of Pangasinan is taking bold steps to bring the salt industry back to life, reaffirming its place in the province’s cultural identity and economy.

Supporting Local Salt Producers

Through the leadership of Governor Ramon V. Guico III and the Provincial Board, programs have been introduced to support small salt farmers and cooperatives. These include:

  • Financial assistance and livelihood grants to rehabilitate salt beds.
  • Capacity-building training to improve traditional salt-making methods with modern technology.
  • Stronger market linkages so that producers can sell their salt at fairer prices.

Infrastructure and Innovation

Recognizing that outdated tools and facilities were major obstacles, the provincial government has begun investing in modern salt farms and processing centers. New projects include the construction of solar-powered dryers and warehouses to reduce losses during the rainy season, as well as research collaborations with academic institutions for better salt production techniques.

Reducing Dependence on Imports

For many years, the Philippines has relied heavily on imported salt, even though Pangasinan once produced more than enough for the nation’s needs. The revival program aims to reduce import dependency by boosting local output. This not only strengthens food security but also ensures that income flows back into the hands of Pangasinenses.

Job Creation and Heritage Preservation

Reviving the salt industry is also about preserving heritage. Salt-making is deeply woven into Pangasinan’s history and traditions. By revitalizing the sector, the government is also creating jobs, empowering coastal communities, and protecting the province’s cultural identity.

A Brighter Future for the Salt Capital

With a mix of modern solutions and respect for traditional practices, the Provincial Government’s efforts to revive the salt industry are beginning to bear fruit. Once again, Pangasinan is positioning itself as the leading salt producer of the Philippines, ensuring that the “land of salt” lives up to its proud name.
